Extra Virgin Olive Oil protects against dementia

The Mediterranean diet, which incidentally is very similar to The Greengrocer's Diet is associated with numerous health benefits including a lower incidence of dementia. The high amount of vegetable and fruit in both these diets helps protect against the many chronic diseases associated with obesity which include some types of cancers, heart disease and diabetes, and the olive oil, also associated with protecting against heart disease has recently been discovered to protects against cognitive decline.

A study conducted by the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University found that consumption of extra-virgin olive oil protects memory and learning ability and reduces the formation of amyloid-beta plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain - classic markers of Alzheimer's disease.

That's complicated science-speak, but essentially what these scientists discovered was that olive oil reduces brain inflammation and activates a process which helps to break down and clear out debris and toxins in and around the cells within the brain - The stuff that leads to dementia.

The study was conducted on mice which were bred to develop Alzheimer's characteristics. Separated into 2 groups, the mice with a diet enriched with olive oil performed significantly better in tests designed to measure memory and learning, than the mice fed on a diet without the olive oil.

Once again scientists confirm what many Europeans have known instinctively for generations which is that a healthy diet comprising of the most natural products derived from nature are what our body needs.
