What's in it for you to eat well?
By: Judy Davie - The Food Coach
As many of you know I am developing a weight loss program with the Western Suburbs Local Health District. Last week was the first week back at work this year, we were locked away in planning meetings which, to be perfectly honest, for someone like me, described as "not having a bureaucratic bone" in my body is quite dull.
Anyway a recurring phrase during these meetings was 'what's in it for me'.
In dealing with anyone, and particularly when you're trying to steer them to your way of thinking you have to work out what's in it for them and appeal to their agenda otherwise it's most unlikely that they'll be disinterested in what you have to say.
It's nothing new but before we get too far into the New Year, it's worth asking yourself what's in it for you to maintain healthy eating habits.
It's easy to go down the gloomy road and point out what's potentially in store for you if you don't eat well, but I'm not quite ready to be a fun sponge and lead by scaring you towards salad.
Sitting in these meetings my mind invariably drifts off to form moving mental pictures quite removed from what anyone is talking about in the room.
One scene I keep drifting back to is where some faceless (and fat) person has reached a fork in the road. One road is a continuation of the path he - or she - has been on which ultimately leads to a darker place. The other is filled with life and gets brighter and more wonderful they further down the road he or she travels. It's on this path where the person has chosen to change his or her eating habits and get healthy.
At this point I shall pause. Please read that last paragraph again and see if it makes you 'feel' something. It makes me feel quite excited because to me this is a road of optimism, and opportunities, one of life and song, experiences and wonder. A healthy body is only a vehicle driven by a clear bright mind. It's where you take it and what you do with it that is important.
Here's my top 10 list of what's in it for me to eat well.
1.It inspires others to eat well
2.I save money
3.I feel younger than my years - even with wrinkles!
4.It helps "keep me up", when life delivers some hard blows
5.I can enjoy a good walk and many other physical activities
6.I'm comfortable wearing a swimsuit (even trying them on is quite fun), and I'm no model!
7.I fit easily into a plane seat
8.I go to the toilet every day
9.It's easy to whip up an evening meal when the crisper is full of veggies
10.Shopping for clothes is fun
